oahu

1-5 April, 2014

Aloha! We arrived safely in Oahu, Hawaii and have since spent the last five days doing exactly as we'd planned - relaxing, surfing, yogaing and sipping beers on the sand. Best. A glamorous start to what will no doubt be a slightly more backpacker styled 9 months ahead.

The highlights
  • Hiring a car and driving on the wrong (ie. right! ) side of the road. Damo did a great job
  • My navigation skills weren't so great. At one point we ended up at some military base surrounded by cops. Lucky for us we met the nicest copper ever - Officer Rob - who not only gave us thorough directions to the North Shore but also gave us his personal cell number in case we ran into any trouble whilst in Oahu. What a nice guy!
  • Chillaxing on beach chairs on Sunset beach (our local), sipping beers, nibbling beef jerkey and talking rubbish whilst watching the sunset. Perfection!
  • Living it up in our little apartment under the Hancock family home, spitting distance from Sunset Beach.
  • Cooking just about every meal in our little flat, including brewing some tasty Americano drip filter coffee.
  • Damo surfed some epic sized waves and survived to tell the tales!
  • Swimming with turtles! One even came up to say aloha to Damo whilst he was surfing! And I had a little chat to a sunbaking turtle I found on one of my beach walks.
  • We saw whales! They were frolicking just off the shore.
  • We checked out "the" Pipeline and its amazing surfers.
  • There are so many local ladies waltzing around in g-string bikinis  (Damo finds this very gross)
  • Peddling retro push bikes around the north shore was a great way to get about.

The Summary
Weather - almost perfect! Mostly sunny with random rain.
Surf - big! 7-10 foot and barrelling. Scary big.
Food - mostly home cooked meals, so delicious, obviously.
Beverages - local beers and G&Ts (not together)
People - super friendly
Accommodation - quiet, self contained pad, right opposite our fav beach
Activities - surf, yoga and bike riding

See you in Maui,
Kath (and Damo)
