Hola chicos! Kath here. We are in Sayulita, a sleepy beach town on the west coast of Mexico. It's great. But it's also sad becuase sayulita is where the Damo and Kath Central American adventure concludes. Yep. All good things must come to an end, chicos, but don't feel too sad for us, we're not even half way through the global extravaganza that is the Damo and Kath adventure! More about our future activities in a moment. For now, I'd like to reflect a little on the adventure we've had so far...
In 130 days, we've traveled:
17,914km by air
5,791km by land and
720km by sea
Thats a whopping 24,425kms of shuffling about this globe..! How epic is that?!
We've also endured:
23 hours on 5 Belizian chicken buses - loud music and sweat included, free of charge
2 death defying boat rides
1 business class flight - which I very much enjoyed
1 unplanned aeroplane landing in the middle of nowhere
1 subsequent near connecting flight miss and 1 bag loss
Umpteen minivan rides - sardine style, sweat also included
1 hitchhiking ride
1 near car crash
1 trip to the hospital
1 bike stack into a fence
1 near bus hijacking incident, and
Many, many blisters, cuts and grazes from the wanderings in between.
But it's all been totally worth it. The last four months of traveling with my wonderful travel buddy Damo have been incredible..!
So, what's next for us you ask? Well, before meeting up again in NYC, Damo and I are heading off on seperate adventures for the next 7.5 weeks (or 52 days, not that I'm counting).
Damo's heading north to San Fran to undertake an awesome road trip across the states with our buddy, Adalbert. The two of them are hiring a mustang!! Thelma and Louise style. Minus the cliff incident. And Brad Pitt. Then again, who knows with those two, they may just meet Brad. How cool would that be?! Anyway, the boys are going to have a rad adventure together and I'm already excited to meet up with them both on the east side and hear all their stories...! See their planned route below.
As for me, I'm spending a couple more weeks chillaxing in Mexico before heading back down to Montezuma, Costa Rica to undertake my Yoga Teacher Training course (or YTT as it's known in the biz). I'm super excited. I've always wanted to do the course but never found the time to. The course is a one month intensive, starting at the end of August so I have just a couple of weeks to complete a bunch of pre assignments and do a whole lot of reading!
So, for the next two months you can expect to still hear from both of us, but we'll be sharing our own individual stories.
Anywho, back to Sayulita...
The highlights
- The best thing about Sayulita was that we had nine whole days with nothing to do. How often does that happen in the real world?! Or even in travel world? Theres normally a ruin to see or caves to dive. But not in sayulita. Theres a beach - that's it. So, naturally, we spent our nine days playing at the beach, reading books, chillaxing at our villa, surfing, yogaing and playing a hell of a lot of yahtzee. Yep, the dice game. We're real good at it now.
- We're also very good now at a game we affectionately call "throws". The game originally started because of Damo. You see, he's like a puppy dog and regularly needs to be taken outside to play fetch. I do this as often as I can with a soft globe-printed ball I brought from Sydney (actually I stole it from Mum, ta Mum). "Throws" evolved from this and is now a fully fledged competitive sport that involves pegging, bouncing and head butting the ball between us, whilst in the surf. It's a lot of fun. (Throws. Copyright. Patent pending.)
- Given our upcoming separation, it was also great to get some quality Damo and Kath time in.
- Plus, we celebrated our four year anniversary together in Sayulita! Can you believe it, four whole years?! Wow. Here's to many, many more..! :)
The Summary
Weather: The wet season arrived! We thoroughly enjoyed the daily thunderstorms, wicked lightening shows and flash flooding sayulita had to offer. Still freaking hot though.
Surf: Small, but super fun. Damo was out for hours on end, getting his final hit of central american waves.
Food: We cooked, a lot. Poached eggs, chic pea salads, lasagnas and veg moussakas for dinner. Yum. Also had our fair share of fish tacos from a little joint down the road. And falafel salads.
Beverages: Filter coffees, red wine, coronas, standard.
People: Um, we met a few people out and about and at the yoga studio I attended, but otherwise we hermitly kept to ourselves.
Accommodation: Damo did it again! He finds the best pads. We had a little apartment just near the quiet part of the beach.
Budget: Under! Wahoo! By 47% too. Turns out that doing nothing is cheap.
Overall: Sayulita was the perfect end to the perfect Central American holiday. It was relaxed, it was fun, and it was enjoyed in good company. And although I'm going to miss my travel buddy like crazy, I have the luxury of enjoying Sayulita and its cute beach a few more days yet...
That's it for now.
Hasta luego chicos,
Kath (and Damo)

Welcome to our Mexican office. |
|
The walk to the office however was social suicide. What a pair of dorks. |
|
Back in our old rhythm of early morning surfs / walks / yoga. |
|
How the other half live in sayulita. |
|
Check out my rad veg moussaka! This is pre bechemal sauce fyi. |
|
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Damo's poached eggs are the best! (As are my toast and avo prep skills, go team) |
|
Yours truly, getting about town with a mint lemonade from the falafel joint. |
|
Where's the big wally? Oh there he is! |
|
And there he is again, outside our humble villa. We on the second floor. |
|
This does not do the flood justice! Locals were rushing around with cement bags, we struggled to walk home with the knee deep, debris filled river in our street and all the stuff that was downstairs at our villa was now floating around in the garden lake. |
|
We played A LOT of yahtzee. Yahtzee! |
|
Morning! |
|
Quit stalling me with your foto's, I need to get to the beach already..! |
|
Mind the puddles. Oh, careful. |
|
Look at me! I'm on a beach and about to surf at sunrise! You enjoy your walk and swim, I see you later. |
|
Nailed it. |
|
I wish that cheeky kid would quit dropping in on my gnarly tricks. |
|
Keep calm, he's not going to eat me. Is he?! Skat crazy pelican! |
|
Yay I survived! Best. Morning. Ever. |
|
Said squishy ball for the wonderful game that is "Throws". Let the games begin! |
|
Victory beers, post game. Damo may have won this "Throws" battle, but he hasn't won the war. |
|
Bags packed. Ready to go. Hasta luego my fave travel buddy, see you in NYC! |
Some info for those playing at home...
